Through the years since that time we have added the highest quality alignment tools that are available. While we still offer optical alignment services, a popular tool that many of our customers request is our laser alignment services.

Our laser alignment tools can provide precision measurements down to the thousandths of an inch. When it comes to getting the most out of your industrial machinery, you must have a high quality alignment process. The smallest amount of misalignment can cause several problems when you turn equipment over long periods of time. Each industry has its own kind of distinct words that relate to different aspects of systems and processes within that discipline. Dimensional metrology is no different. For today’s blog post we will list and elaborate on the mechanics of the vocabulary that we use when we are on a job or reporting on it in a followup report.

Control Points – In order for a measurement to be reliable we must confirm that measurement with other points of reference. These other points are referred to as control points. The control points must be stationary in reference to the piece being measured. This repeatable measurement is called precision and it is critical to getting quality results during alignment.

Tolerance – The total amount of error allowed during alignment is called the tolerance. For some machinery the tolerance is as much as five thousandths of an inch. In other situations the tolerance might be as low as a few millimeters. Tolerance is determined before the alignment process begins.

Adjustment – After the initial measurements have been taken the results are calculated to determine if the machinery is within tolerance or out of tolerance. An adjustment is made to the equipment being measured. After an adjustment has been accomplished the machine being measured must then be remeasured to determine if the adjustment was successful or not. Adjustments can happen once or many times during an alignment process.

Calibration – Calibration is a comparison between measurements – one of known magnitude or correctness made or set with one device and another measurement made in as similar a way as possible with a second device. A field calibration is a process by which a laser tracker is established to be in perfect working order and ready to start performing measurements.

At Schaeffer Precision Alignment we use these and many other highly complex techniques to insure that your equipment is measured correctly and upon adjustment it will run better than ever before. Precision alignment will lower your downtime and increase your production.
